wayfinding is an investment, not an expense

In many towns you’ll see a big “Welcome to…” sign but beyond that there is nothing to direct visitors to local attractions and downtown retail/ dining. Some have tried to come up with their own wayfinding signage systems creating and installing signs without a plan. This is not wayfinding and it isn’t helpful to their community or visitors.

A properly designed wayfinding system does much more than guide people to their destinations. It enhances the ambiance and attractiveness of the community - making visitors and residents feel at home and welcomed. A well designed wayfinding system will work so well that it doesn’t stand out, it works within its environment and will set a visual brand for the community.

wayfinding is as much a science as an art

Wayfinding systems are a complex undertaking, requiring in-depth research and planning. It helps to have an experienced design team to work with. Things that must be considered include a range of navigational matters and related issues such as federal, state, and local sign regulations as well as knowledge of issues related to ADA handicapped accessibility. A clear understanding of current and future branding, promotional issues, and current economic development plans are also key to designing a systems that positively affects its brand.

wayfinding reinforces a positive experience

For decades we’ve worked with large cities such as Charlotte, NC and North Carolina’s capital Raleigh and we have learned some valuable lessons along the way. Those lessens have helped us develop ways to apply this knowledge to smaller communities, providing them with the same competitive advantages. By doing so, we have designed successful wayfinding systems for smaller communities like Rock Hill, SC; Kannapolis, NC and downtown Newberry, SC; enhancing their brand, defining their unique “sense of place” and contributing to their long term economic growth.
